what I love is not necessarily what I like

Throughout my year at the Royal College of Art, every style I painted felt as though it disappeared from me. I want to keep painting until there is nothing left of my own ideas. Only then will I know that I have truly begun to paint.

Yet painting is not only about the pursuit of technique. Life itself matters just as much. The roads you have walked, the losses you have endured, the moments of joy and solitude you have lived through, these gradually settle into the painting and become its soul. Technique can be learnt and imitated, but a life cannot.

To me, painting is almost a form of pure faith. It is not about proving anything, nor is it about pursuing a particular style. It is a continual process of letting go of oneself and trusting the unknown. Every time I stand before a canvas, I am practising how to see again, and how to believe again.

After all, what I love is not necessarily what I like.
